A Minecraft version problem can involve the game protocol, server software, mod loader or Java runtime. Identify the exact error and compare all four before changing anything. “Latest” on two download pages does not guarantee a compatible combination.
Record the versions actually running
| Component | Where to verify |
|---|---|
| Client game version | The launcher profile used for this connection |
| Server software and game version | The current startup log |
| Mod loader and pack revision | Server files and the client pack manifest |
| Java runtime | The runtime reported by the actual startup process |
The installed Java on your laptop does not determine a hosted server’s runtime. Current Paper documentation lists Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21.11 and Java 25 for 26.1 onward; consult its version table for your chosen release and recheck when upgrading.
Match the error to the layer
- For an outdated-client or outdated-server message, compare game versions.
- For a loader or mod-list rejection, compare the exact pack and required server-side mods.
- For UnsupportedClassVersionError during startup, check the required Java runtime.
- If the log shows an unexpected server build, inspect the configured startup JAR.
- If only a proxy connection fails, check the proxy and backend compatibility together.
Do not downgrade a live world as a diagnostic shortcut. Preserve a complete backup and test changes on a copy. Removing a mod can affect saved blocks, items or dimensions even when the server starts afterward.
Confirm a complete session
Start the intended build, join with the matching client profile and visit a representative area. Test the features supplied by the pack or plugins, not just the login screen. Keep the working version manifest so the next player can install the same combination.
Use the mod loader comparison to identify the platform, and follow safe version changes when an upgrade is required.
