From preview to multiplayer

How to change your Minecraft MOTD.

Start with the message, then put it in the component that answers your server-list ping.

01 / DESIGN

Say what makes your server yours.

Put the name or main idea on the first line. Use the second for a game mode, season or invitation. Try a preset, choose contrasting colours and keep the wording short enough to read at a glance.

The saved server name above the message belongs to the player’s client. Changing it in this preview does not change the generated MOTD.

02 / INSTALL

Using server.properties

  1. Choose server.properties and copy the generated line.
  2. Stop your server and back up the existing file.
  3. Replace its motd= entry, keeping the other settings.
  4. Save, start the server and refresh your multiplayer list.

Need other settings too? Use the Minecraft configuration generator.

03 / CHECK

Using a MOTD plugin or proxy

For a MiniMessage-compatible setting, copy the MiniMessage output. If your plugin has separate line fields, expand the separate-line output. Follow its instructions for configuration quoting and reloading.

Joining through a proxy? Check its public response. Changing a backend’s message may not change the one players see.

Configuration references: Paper server.properties, MiniMessage formatting, and MiniMOTD.

Keep the codes handy

Minecraft MOTD colour codes.

The classic palette uses 0–9 and a–f. The generator writes the escaped section-sign codes for server.properties automatically.

Formatting codes: §l bold, §o italic, §n underline, §m strikethrough and §r reset. Ampersand codes such as &a belong to settings that explicitly support that notation; they are not interchangeable with escaped server.properties output. Legacy formatting reference.

01What is a Minecraft server MOTD?

MOTD means message of the day. For a Minecraft Java server, it is the description players see beneath the saved server name in their multiplayer list. Use it to describe your game modes, community or a new season.

02How do I make a two-line Minecraft MOTD?

Write your headline in Line 1 and your supporting message in Line 2. The server.properties output includes an escaped newline between them. MiniMessage output uses a newline tag; separate line values are also available for plugins that use line1 and line2 settings.

03Why does the output include Unicode escapes and backslashes?

The server.properties format uses escapes to preserve formatting characters, Unicode, spaces and line breaks. Copy the full generated motd= line as shown. Do not turn it into two physical lines or remove the backslashes.

04Can I use RGB colours and gradients in my MOTD?

Choose MiniMessage mode and enable Gradient on either line. You need a plugin or proxy setting that supports MiniMessage, such as MiniMOTD. The server.properties mode uses the standard 16-colour palette and does not export MiniMessage tags.

05Does this work with Paper, Spigot, Vanilla or a proxy?

Use server.properties mode for the normal Java server setting. If a MOTD plugin or proxy controls the public server-list response, configure that component instead. Choose MiniMessage only when the receiving setting supports it; not every plugin uses the same format.

06Why is my new MOTD not showing?

Check that you edited the server or proxy your players actually connect to. A plugin or hosting-panel setting may override the file. For server.properties, save the change with the server stopped, start it again, then refresh the multiplayer list.

07Is this a Bedrock MOTD generator?

This tool targets the Minecraft Java server list. Bedrock Dedicated Server uses a different configuration, and this Java motd= output is not a drop-in replacement. For cross-play, check how your proxy or bridge supplies the public server description.

08Will the preview look exactly the same in Minecraft?

The preview approximates colours and formatting. Your client font, resource pack, GUI scale and window width can change spacing or clip a long line. Check the result in the client before sharing the server widely.

09Is the generator free, and can I share a design?

Yes. There is no account requirement, and generation happens in your browser. Share setup copies a link containing the design so someone else can reopen it. Anyone with that link can read the included text; the tool does not install the message on a server.
