Free server tool / Server configuration

Your rules. Ready to put in writing.

Build a server.properties starter for Vanilla or Paper. Choose the settings, understand what they do, and download a file you can review.

01 / Set the experience

A readable server.properties starter.

For a standalone Java server using Vanilla or Paper. Select the basics, review the output, and merge the settings into your existing file.

View versus simulation

View distance controls terrain sent to players. Simulation distance controls the nearby area where entities are updated. Increase either only after checking the workload.

Standalone authentication

The output keeps online-mode enabled and remote console access disabled. A Velocity backend needs its own forwarding and firewall setup; this is not a proxy configuration.

Apply, then measure

Save a copy of your current file. Merge the selected settings and test after restarting. Use the Spark analyzer to compare performance.

Settings reference: Paper server.properties documentation. Older server versions may support different options.

5 questions
01Should I replace my entire server.properties file?

Merge the generated settings into a copy of your existing file. This output contains only selected options, so replacing the whole file could reset settings not covered here, including your port. Stop the server before editing and restart afterward.

02Does max-players improve server capacity?

No. It controls how many players can connect. Performance depends on hardware, software and the world workload. Use the RAM calculator for an initial memory estimate and a Spark capture to investigate real load.

03What is the difference between the two distance settings?

View distance controls the terrain sent to players. Simulation distance controls the area where entities are updated. Raising these settings can increase server work, so compare captures under similar player activity.

04Can I use this behind Velocity?

This generator is for standalone servers and keeps online-mode enabled. Proxy backends need version-appropriate forwarding, authentication and network access controls. Follow the proxy documentation for that setup instead.

05Why does the MOTD contain backslashes in the file?

The generator escapes special characters and Unicode for the properties format. The preview shows the human-readable text; the escaped file preserves it when the server reads the property.
