With colocation, you supply the physical server and arrange space, power and connectivity for it. With a dedicated server, you rent a machine supplied as part of the hosting service. The important difference is responsibility for the hardware throughout its life, not simply the monthly price.
Compare the complete operating arrangement
| Area | Colocation question | Dedicated question |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Who purchases and keeps replacement parts? | Which configuration and replacement terms are supplied? |
| Installation | Who ships, mounts and cables the machine? | What deployment work is included? |
| Remote access | Which management ports and console tools are available? | Which control-panel functions are supplied? |
| Exit | How is equipment removed and returned? | How will data be migrated before cancellation? |
Operating-system administration is a separate issue. Owning or renting the server does not by itself mean someone else will patch your software, manage your applications or test backups. Confirm those responsibilities explicitly.
Build a useful comparison
- List the hardware you already own and its remaining useful life.
- Include power, networking, addresses and any installation charges.
- Allow for shipping, spare parts and approved on-site work.
- Estimate the cost and time of a failed drive, power supply or motherboard.
- Compare the same recovery requirements and contract period for both services.
Colocation may fit specialized hardware or an established equipment fleet. Renting can simplify hardware sourcing for a new project. Neither choice removes the need for application recovery and an independent backup.
Start with the service you need
For EnderHost, compare the location-specific rack-space options on the colocation page and the available machines on the dedicated page. Confirm the exact facility and shipping process with the team before sending hardware. External facility documentation explains general concepts, not your EnderHost service terms.
Review shipping preparation and power planning before selecting colocation.
